肉毒桿菌神經毒素（BoNT）是人類已知的毒性大的物質之一。已經鑒定了七種免疫學上不同的神經毒素血清型，命名為A至G型（BoNT / A，BoNT / B，BoNT / C，BoNT / D，BoNT / E，BoNT / F，BoNT / G）。這些肉毒桿菌神經毒素天然產生與一種或多種無毒神經毒素相關蛋白（NAP）復合。NAP對于攝入毒性很重要，因為它們保護神經毒素免受蛋白酶，酸性，熱的影響，并且它們也可能在粘膜層的易位中發揮作用。

每種毒素很容易分為三個區域，反映出對毒性很重要的三個功能; 特異性底物的結合，易位和切割。重鏈負責識別突觸前膜上的特定神經節苷脂和特定蛋白質受體。重鏈的易位結構域部分介導輕鏈穿過內體膜，后靶蛋白被酶促結構域切割。
